To obtain a polarizing film excellent in polarization and optical characteristics such as transmittance and excellent also in durability by uniaxially stretching a raw film of a specified blend.
A raw film of a blend of an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and a polyvinyl alcohol polymer is uniaxially stretched to obtain the objective polarizing film. The ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer is obtd. by copolymerizing ethylene with a vinyl ester monomer such as vinyl acetate and saponifying the resultant ethylene-vinyl ester copolymer to convert the vinyl ester units to vinyl alcohol units. The polyvinyl alcohol polymer is obtd. by radical- polymerizing a vinyl ester monomer such as vinyl acetate and saponifying the resultant polyvinyl ester polymer. Since the polymn. degree of the ethylene- vinyl alcohol copolymer affects the performance of the polarizing film, it is regulated to ≥500, preferably ≥1,000.
