Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve the yield of a polarization maintaining optical fiber and to obtain a high extinction ratio by embedding said optical fiber into a quartz substrate in such a manner that one intrinsic axis of polarization comes in parallel with the substrate and polishing the substrate near to the core and forming a thin metallic layer consisting of aluminum, etc., on the polished surface. CONSTITUTION:Since the metallic layers 8 exist on the joint surfaces of two sheets of the quartz substrates 1, the polarization mode, the electric field of which is perpendicular to the plane of the metallic layer 8, of the two orthogonal polarization modes propagating in the polarization maintaining optical fiber SPF receives a large absorption loss. The directional coupler, therefore, has the effectively absolute single polarization characteristic. The polishing type optical fiber directional coupler having the high extinction ratio is thereby produced at the good yield.
