Abstract:
Disclosed is a polyarylene copolymer containing a sulfonic acid group, which has high proton conductivity and excellent methanol resistance. Also disclosed are a solid polymer electrolyte and a proton conducting membrane, each is made of such a copolymer. Specifically disclosed is an aromatic compound which is characterized by being represented by the following formula (1). [In the formula (1), A and D respectively represent at least one structure selected from the group consisting of a direct bond, -O-, -S-, -CO-, -SO2-, -SO-, -CONH-, -COO-, -(CF2)i- (wherein i represents an integer of 1-10), -(CH2)j- (wherein j represents an integer of 1-10), -CR'2- (wherein R' represents an aliphatic hydrocarbon group, an aromatic hydrocarbon group or a halogenated hydrocarbon group), a cyclohexylidene group and a fluorenylidene group; B represents an oxygen atom or a sulfur atom; PH represents a fused aromatic ring; X represents an atom or a group selected from halogen atoms other than fluorine, -SO2CH3 and -SO2CF3; R1-R20 may be the same as or different from one another and represent at least one atom or group selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a fluorine atom, an alkyl group, a partially or fully halogenated alkyl group, an allyl group, an aryl group, a nitro group and a nitrile group; l and m respectively represent an integer of 0-4; q represents an integer not less than 2; t represents an integer of 0-4; n and p respectively represent the composition ratio of each unit, and p is a number of 0-1 other than 0 with n + p being 1.]
