Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a polyarylate improved in the reactivity with an amino, a hydroxyl or the like by forming acid chloride groups at the terminals thereof by reacting a mixture of a bisphenol with optionally a phenolic compound with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid chloride. CONSTITUTION:A mixture (A) of a bisphenol [e.g. 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) propane] with optionally a phenolic compound is reacted with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid chloride (B) (e.g. terephthalic dichloride) in an amount of 5-10% in excess of the theoretical number of equivalents, on the basis of functional group equivalents, of component A at 60 deg.C or below in the presence of 0-5mol, per 100mol of component A, of a catalyst to obtain a polyarylate of a weight-average mol.wt. (in terms of PS) of 3000-150000 and having acid chloride groups with an acid chloride value of 10<-6> equivalent/g on the terminals of the polymer.
