PURPOSE: To provide a polycarbonate having an extremely suppressed content of a specific compound, giving an optically homogeneous molded article having small birefringence and useful for optical disk, etc.

CONSTITUTION: This polycarbonate contains ≤0.2wt.% of the compound of formula I or formula II. The content of the compound is determined e.g. by mixing a methylene chloride solution containing about 6-23wt.% of the polycarbonate with about 1/2 to 2 times volume of an aliphatic(hydrocarbon, etc., separating the formed polymer precipitate and extracting and separating the compound in a state dissolved in a non-solvent. The content of the compound determined by this process is preferably restricted within 0.01-0.2wt.%.
