PURPOSE: To obtain the title polymer which has a small photoelastic constant and is suited for an optical information recording disc in which laser beams are utilized, by polycondensing 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-isopropylphenyl)propane through a carbonate bond.

CONSTITUTION: An aromatic polycarbonate polymer of formula II is produced either by transesterifying 2,2-bis(4-hydroxy-3-isopropyl)propane of formula I with diphenyl carbonate or by polycondensing it with phosgene. The obtained polycarbonate polymer has a so small photoelastic constant that it can be suitably used for the production of an optical information recording disc which records a signal with laser beams and reads the recorded signal by reflection or transmission of laser beams.
