To provide a novel polycyclic compound which is useful as a pigment excellent in solvent resistance, and to provide a coloring composition containing the polycyclic compound.
The polycyclic compound is represented by general formula (1a) and the coloring composition contains the polycyclic compound. In the formula, R1 to R6 represent a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent, or R1 and R2, R3 and R4, and R5 and R6 represent one substituent forming a double bond to a carbon atom to which each is bound; X1a to X4a each represent a carbon atom or a hetero atom; Y represents O, S, NR7 or CR8R9, and R7 to R9 represent a hydrogen atom or a monovalent substituent; and a benzene ring a and a benzene ring b may have a monovalent substituent or may be condensed.
