PURPOSE: To shorten the start time required for the changeover from the high resolution scanning state to the low resolution scanning state with respect to the controller and the control method of a polygon motor in the variable resolution laser printer.
CONSTITUTION: The controller is provided with a control section 11 converting a scanning signal into a drive signal when the scanning signal for a high resolution picture and a low resolution picture respectively inputted in time series, a drive section 2 supplying power to the polygon motor 4 with the drive signal, and a braking circuit 5 braking the revolution of the polygon motor 4 till to be reached to a rotation frequency corresponding to a scanning signal of the minimum resolution with a brake signal outputted from the control section 11 when the scanning signal of high resolution is finished and the braking stop is implemented by using a synchronizing signal outputted by a PLL circuit 12.
