Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new polymers having a structure in which a liquid crystal group is bonded through a flexible siloxane bond-containing spacer to the main skeleton composed of a rigid polymer and useful as display materials, light shutters, non-linear optical materials, etc., in the field of electronics.

CONSTITUTION: The objective polymers are represented by formula I [A1 is a tetravalent organic group constituting a tetracarboxylic acid; R1 to R4 are each an alkyl or phenyl; X is single bond, O, etc.; Q is a liquid crystal group; (p) and (q) are each 2 to 10] and have ≥1000 number-average molecular weight. Each of the polymers is synthesized, e.g. by reacting dinitrobenzyl alcohol with a haloalkene compound and an alkoxysilane compound in order, subsequently hydrolyzing, an alkoxysilyl as the resultant product, then reacting the obtained hydroxysilyl-containing dinitro compound with a base and a dichlorosilane compound in order, subsequently reacting the resultant compound of formula II with an alkenyl compound of formula III, then allowing an reduction reaction to take place, finally polycondensing the resultant diamine compound of formula IV with a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride of formula V and subsequently imidating the obtained product.
