Abstract:

To provide a method for manufacturing methyl lactate of good qualities by depolymerizing polylactic acid by using an easily handleable catalyst capable of preventing deterioration in qualities of lactic acid.

The depolymerization method of polylactic acid comprises alcoholyzing polylactic acid using methanol at 60-100°C in the presence of a zinc compound catalyst composed of a zinc organic carboxylate and/or zinc carbonate.
