Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the subject polymer, capable of readily regulating the molecular weight, easily melt moldable due to its good thermal stability and suitable as various biodegradable materials by adding an aliphatic carboxylic acid in a specific proportion in polymerizing lactide which is a dimer of lactic acid.
CONSTITUTION: Lactide which is a dimer of lactic acid is polymerized in the presence of a 2-51C aliphatic carboxylic acid (preferably stearic acid) in an amount of 0.001-5mol%, preferably 0.05-0.6mol% based on the lactide to afford the objective polymer of the formula [(n) is ≥10; X is 1-50C alkyl and/or 1-50C carboxyalkyl]. Furthermore, a catalyst is usually used for the reaction; however, stannous octylate and zinc octylate are preferred as the catalyst.
