Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a polymer blend consisting of a polymer mainly comprising vinyl alcohol units and a copolymer comprising an alkyl methacrylate and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, which has favorable balance of barrier performance and strength characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: This polymer blend, which can be fused and processed, consists of (A) 80-98 pts. of a polymer containing units of the formula -CH2-CH(OH)- by 50 mol.% or more, and units selected among the formula -CH2-CH2-, -CH2- CHR-, formulae I and II (R is an alkyl; R1 is H, CH3; R2 is an alkyeneoxy), and (B) 2-20 pts. of a polymer containing 90-98 wt.% of units of formula III (R3 is a lower alkyl) and 2-10 wt.% of units derived from an unsaturated copolymerizable carboxylic acid (anhydride) and without containing units of a nitrogen-containing monomer such as of the formula -NH-CO-NHR1. The component A is, favorably, a polymer of vinyl acetate. The component B is, favorably, a copolymer of 75-98 pts. of methacrylic acid methyl methacrylate and 2-25 pts. of mathacrylic acid.
