PURPOSE: The titled polymer that is made by treating a copolymer containing a specific compound such as acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride as well as vinylidene chloride with alkali, thus being used as a water retention material for agricultural or horticultural purposes, because of its high water absorption and not becoming flowable.
CONSTITUTION: A powder or any other form of a copolymer containing, as essential components, at least one of monomers of the formula (X is H, methyl; Y is cyano, amide or carboxyl) such as acrylonitrile (more than 30mol%, preferably over 50mol%) and vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride (0.5W2.5wt%) is treated with alkali such as sodium hydroxide to produce the objective polymer capable of adsorbing water 10W100 times its own weight.
