To provide a cyclic olefin polymer excellent in heat resistance and solubility in polar solvents and closely adhesive to inorganic substrates, and provide hydrogenated products of the same.

The cyclic olefin polymer is prepared by polymerizing a monomer composition containing a cyclic olefin having an N-substituted cyclic imide structure as a monomer. Further, the polymer is hydrogenated. The polymer and the hydrogenated product are suitably used as a polymer for electric insulation membranes and resists for producing semiconductors, and transparent cover films for liquid crystal display devices.
