Abstract:

To provide a liquid crystal device configured to enable a short rise time (when an electric field is applied) and a short fall time (time for relaxation to the initial field-off state when the electric field is removed).

A liquid crystal device comprises: a first substrate 10; a second substrate 11; and a liquid crystal layer 12 sandwiched between the first substrate and the second substrate, the liquid crystal layer comprising a nematic liquid crystal material and a polymer network. The polymer network is anchored to the first substrate and is configured to alternatingly induce splay deformation and bend deformation of the nematic liquid crystal material along a line parallel with the first substrate.
