To obtain polymer particles useful as a spacer in liquid crystal displays by incorporating a copolymer of specific amounts of a polyfunctional (meth)acrylate monomer and a polyfunctional aromatic monomer and imparting a specific particle size and a specific recovery factor to the polymer particles.
Polymer particles contain copolymer of 1-30 wt.% of a polyfunctional (meth)acrylate monomer and 70-99 wt.% of a polyfunctional aromatic monomer and have a particle size of 1-15 μm, a standard deviation smaller than 4% of their average diameter and a recovery factor of 35% or more. As the polyfunctional (meth)acrylate monomer, 2-18C alkanediol di(meta) acrylate, and 1,2-ethane-, 1,3-propane-, 1,4-butane-, 1,5-pentane-, 1,6-hexane-, 1,8-octane- and 1,10-decanediol di(meth)acrylates are preferred. As the polyfunctional aromatic monomer, divinylbenzene, divinylnaphthalene and N,N- divinylaniline are preferred.
