To produce a polymeric material having the desirable characteristics of HIPE (high internal phase emulsion) polymers but lacking the skin.
For example, a process for producing a porous, cross-linked polymeric microbead comprises: the first step (a) of combining an oil continuous phase (i), which includes a substantially water-insoluble, monofunctional monomer (1), a substantially water-insoluble, polyfunctional cross-linking agent (2) and an emulsifier (3) suitable for forming a stable water-in-oil emulsion, with an aqueous discontinuous phase (ii) to form an emulsion containing at least about 70% aqueous discontinuous phase; the second step (b) of adding the formed emulsion to an aqueous suspension medium to form an oil-in-water suspension of dispersed emulsion droplets and the final step (c) of polymerizing the emulsion droplets.
