PURPOSE: To obtain the subject compound useful for a liquid crystal display element having characteristics of being bright even in applying no voltage without causing disclination lines.
CONSTITUTION: This polymerizable compound of formula I {A is H or a group of formula II [X1 is H or methyl; (m) is an integer of 0-14; (p) is 0 or 1, with the proviso that (p) is 0 when (m) is o]; B is H or a group of formula III [X2 is H or methyl; (n) is an integer of 0-14; (q) is 0 or 1, with the proviso that (q) is 0 when (n) is 0]; Y1 to Y4 are independently each H or F; A and B are not simultaneously H}. The liquid crystal display element can be obtained by oppositely arranging a pair of substrates 1 in which at least either is transparent through a gap, a liquid crystal layer 2, arranged in the gap therebetween and containing a liquid crystal composition containing a liquid crystal material, the polymerizable polymeric material and at least one of the polymeric compound. The liquid crystal layer 2 has a liquid crystal region 20 and a polymeric wall 21 installed so as to surround the region 20.
