Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain a new polymerizable double bond-containing cyclobutenedione derivative useful as a raw material for a polymer, for producing an agent for non-linear optical element showing excellently nonlinear optical characteristics.
CONSTITUTION: A polymerizable double bond-containing cyclobutenedione of formula I (R1 and R2 are alkyl; R3 and R4 are H or alkyl or R1 and R2, R1 and R3 and R2 and R4 are mutually bonded to form nitrogen-containing 4-membered to 6-membered heterocyclic ring R is H or 1-3C alkyl; (m) is 2-12) such as 1-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-2-(2-methacryloyloxyethylamino)-cyclobutene-3,4- dione. The polymerizable double bond-containing cyclobutenedione of formula I is obtained by reacting a cyclobutenedione derivative of formula II with an unsaturated fatty acid derivative of formula III (R5 is H or 1-3C alkyl; X is halogen) in the presence of an acid binder. A polymer of formula IV (R6 is H, halogen, alkyl, etc.; R7 is halogen, acyl, etc.; (x) is 3×1/103-1; (n) is 100-100,000) is obtained from the compound of formula I.
