Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain a vinyl acetate polymer which has good heat stability and, can resist coloration at high temperatures by using a specified organic peroxide as a polymerization initiator in polymerizing a vinyl acetate monomer. CONSTITUTION:A process for polymerizing a vinyl acetate monomer or a mixture thereof with a vinyl monomer copolymerizable therewith [e.g. (meth)acrylic acid, a (meth)acrylic ester or (meth)acrylonitrile], wherein at least one member selected form the group consisting of an organic peroxide of formula I (wherein R is 3-10 C alkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkylcyclohexyl, provided that R is n-propyl when it is a 3C alkyl) and an organic peroxide of formula II (wherein R<1> is 3-10 C alpha-branched alkyl; and R<2> is 4-10 C tert. alkyl) is used as a polymerization initiator. A polymer which has good heat stability and does not color at high temperatures can be obtained.
