Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new compound excellent in compatibility with a hydrophilic monomer such as hydroxyethyl methacrylate and useful for lens for eye such as contact lens having high oxygen permeability, high hydrophilic property and low elastic modulus. SOLUTION: This compound is represented by formula I [R1 is H or methyl; R2 to R4 are each H, a (substituted) alkyl or a (substituted) aryl; (a) is 0-3 when R1 is H or 0-1 when R1 is methyl; (k) is 0-20], e.g. a compound of formula II (Me is methyl). The compound of formula I, e.g. a compound of formula II is obtained by reacting 3-glycidoxypropyldimethylethoxy-silane with methoxytrimethylsilane in water at room temperature and reacting the resultant compound with methacrylic acid in the presence of hydroquinone and potassium hydroxide. This polymer is obtained from the compound. The polymer is useful as lens for eye, artificial cornea, etc.
