Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new polyol compound useful as a functional organic material compound such as a physiologically active substance or a liquid crystal or a raw material for functional polymeric materials.

CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is expressed by the formula (A is alkylene which has a straight-chain like, a branched or a cyclic structure and may contain a substituent group or bivalent aromatic group which may have a substituent group), e.g. 1,2-di(2'-hydroxy-3',3',3'-trifluoropropyloxy)ethane. This compound is obtained by reacting 1,2-epoxy-3,3,3-trifluoropropane with a compound having plural hydroxyl groups (e.g. ethylene glycol, 1,2- cyclohexanediol or catechol) in the presence of a catalyst, preferably an acidic catalyst. Thereby, the objective optically active compound is obtained by using the 1,2-epoxy-3,3,3-trifluoropropane without optical activity.
