To obtain a polyphenylene oligomer or polymer useful for filling spaces and for flattening patterned surfaces and giving cured articles having high thermal stability, high glass transition temperature and low dielectric constant by the Diels-Alder reaction of a compound having dienic functional groups with a compound having dienophilic functional groups.
This crosslinked or crosslinkable polyphenylene is obtained by the Diels-Alder reaction of at least one compound having two or more dienic functional groups with one or more compounds having two or more dienophilic functional groups (preferably acetylene groups), wherein at least one of the compounds has three or more functional groups. The polyphenylene is its oligomer, non-cured polymer or cured polymer. The dienic functional groups are preferably cyclopentadienone groups, and the ratio of the cyclopentadienone groups : acetylene groups is preferably 1:1 to 1:3. At least 10% of the cyclopentadienone groups are preferably not reacted.
