NEW MATERIAL: A polyvalent metal salt of a sulfonated deriv. of benzylidenecamphor represented by formula I [wherein Mn+ is a polyvalent metal cation (n is 2, 3, or 4); and one of X1 and X2 is H and the other is a group of formula II or III].

USE: An ultraviolet screening agent.

PROCESS: A polyvalent metal salt of formula IV (wherein Z is an inorg. or org. anion; and m is 1 or 2) and a hydroxide, optionally in the form of a soln. or an aq. dispersion, are added to an aq. soln. of a benzylidenecamphor deriv. of formula V (wherein A is H, an alkali metal, etc.; and one of X'1 and X'2 is H and the other is a group of formula II or III) to give a compd. of formula I. The polyvalent metal salt is added under stirring. The compd. of formula I in an amt. of 0.25-3 wt.% (based on the total wt. of the compsn.) is incorporated into a cosmetic compsn.
