Abstract:
PURPOSE:To facilitate the production and reduce the cost of a poppet valve consisting of a head part and a stem part by integrally forming the poppet valve from ceramics and covering the external face of the stem part with metal. CONSTITUTION:A poppet valve 2 consisting the intake and exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine consists of a stem part 4, a head part 6 and a retaining groove part 8. In such poppet valve 2, the whole body thereof is integrally made of ceramics with the diameter (d) of the stem part slightly less than the diameter D given when said valve 2 is finished and with the head part 6 baked in desired dimensions. Molten metal such as molybdenum having superior friction characteristics is injected against the external surface of the stem part to form a metal part 10 of a thickness of (t). So, after the injection the diameter of the stem part is D1. The machining, that is, grinding is executed on the stem part 4 until the diameter thereof becomes D.
