PURPOSE: To provide a portable radio telephony device with a facsimile function capable of facsimile transmission regardless of location and time band.

CONSTITUTION: In a radio telephony device main body integrating a speaker 5, microphone 9, a console panel 7 and transmission/receiving parts 23 and 21, an optical system reader part 11 to be externally used is provided. A reading start instruction is issued by the console panel 7 while overlapping the optical system reader part 11 on a document face, the characters on the document are converted into reading signals in the reader part 11 and stored in a storage part 29. The reading signals are read out of the storage part 29 and these data are compressed in a data compression part 27. The compressed read-out signals are modulated and added to the transmission part 23. High freqquency signal are modulated with a modulated signal from the modulation/demodulation part 25 in the transmission part 23 and emitted as radio waves from an antenna 19.
