To provide a position detector capable of reducing the cost which is superior in reliability.
The position detector includes: a shift lever 2; a shift knob 10 provided to an upper end of the shift lever 2; an electrode part 21 provided to a lower end of the shift lever 2; an operational fulcrum 25 that rotatably supports a shift lever 2; a capacitance coupling sensor 20 disposed in a state of non-contact with an electrode part 21. When the shift knob 10 is operated, the shift lever 2 rotates and the electrode part 21 moves over the surface of the capacitance coupling sensor 20 in a non-contact state, and the capacitance coupling sensor 20 detects the position of the electrode part 21 on the basis of the change of capacitance accompanying the movement of the electrode part 21. With this, a piece of shift position information and a piece of track information are obtained.
