Abstract:
PURPOSE:To enable highly-precise detection of an absolute position by enlarging the quantity of light of a common light-emitting element at the time of detection of an absolute code. CONSTITUTION:Binary codes of an absolute code string whereon position data are recorded serially are detected serially by a code detecting means 7. Next, the serial binary codes are converted into parallel ones by a serial-parallel signal conversion means 12. By a position data conversion means 14, subsequently, absolute position data for determining an initial position on the basis of these codes or checking the absolute position data by an incremental code can be obtained. By increasing the quantity of light emitted by a common light-emitting element at the time of the operation of the code detecting means 7 which operates for a relatively short time, an absolute signal being excellent in S/N can be obtained. The quantity of the light emitted by the common light- emitting element becomes small at the time of discrete operation of incremental code detecting means 4 and 5 which is executed for a relatively long time, and in this case as well, an incremental signal being excellent in S/N can be obtained.
