PURPOSE: To accurately determine a cargo handling target position and to enable automation of cargo handling, by a method wherein through measurement of distances between a stationary slave station on a ship, the moving slave station of a spreader, and a reference station on the land side, the relative position of the moving slave station of the spreader based on a cargo handling target position on a ship is determined.
CONSTITUTION: Three reference stations B1, B2, and B3 are installed on the land side, and two stationary slave stations C1 and C2 the positions of which are determined based on a cargo handling target position A are installed at 1a on a ship. Through measurement of distances between the slave stations C1 and C2 and the reference stations B1, B2, and B3, the cargo handling target position A can be accurately determined. A moving slave station is mounted to a spreader 9 and through determination of distances between the moving slave station and the reference stations B1, B2, and B3, the position of the spreader can e determined. The position is compared with the cargo handling target position A, and through control of the spreader 9 so that the two positions coincide with each other, cargo handling can be automated.
