To provide a positioning method and device allowing even a unskilled worker to perform centering of submicron accuracy without generating wear of a distal end of a tool.
A contact sensing machine 101 mounted with a contact sensor 102 on a main spindle rotary shaft 301 of a machining machine is mounted so that a plane of the contact sensor 102 may form a prescribed angle A1 in a main spindle rotating direction. The distal end of the tool 201 is made adjacent to the contact sensor 102 once or at least twice by using a tool moving means. The contact of the tool 201 and the contact sensor 102 is detected by a signal detecting device 103, and a contact position of the tool 201 is specified by a control device 305. The contact sensing machine 101 is rotated by a prescribed angle A2 in the spindle shaft rotating direction, and the distal end of the tool 201 is made adjacent to the contact sensor 102 once or at least twice by using the tool moving means, and the position of the contact point is specified in the same way as the method. By specifying at least two contact points, the centering of the tool is performed.
