Abstract:

To locate an object in a storage cell accurately by sensing the time of arrival of a gripper mechanism at a home position, memorizing the position display of the home position, and detecting the time when the gripper mechanism is located at a position for taking out the object in a predetermined storage cell, etc.

In this automated storage system 1 for controlling media such as a magnetic tape cartridge 5, etc., to be stored in one of plural storage cells in a magazine 4, the cartridge 5 is transported by a picker assembly 3 with front and rear grippers between a memory device 2 and plural storage cells. The picker assembly 3 controls each cartridge 5 to be located inside a storage cell by first establishing a zero position reference and locating a home position relatively therefrom. An infrared detector and infrared emitter are situated on the picker assembly 3 for precisely locating the home position.
