The positioning unit for a hand-held tool device 3 for propelling a tool 2 in an operating direction A is equipped with a non-contact type distance measuring means 4 which allows fixation onto the hand-held tool device. The distance measuring means 4 contains one or more distance sensor 5 for measuring distance to an object 6 along measuring directions M, M' and M", and a computing unit 7 for comparing the measure value with target values which can be set in advance and outputting a signal according to the compared result. The measuring directions M and M' are at least oriented perpendicularly to the operating direction A.
