To obtain a powdery chelate-catching material capable of exhibiting excellent catching performances for metal ions and the like and capable of being used in the present form as such or in an existing device by introducing chelate-forming functional groups to the molecules of a powdery material.
This powdery chelate-catching material is obtained by introducing chelate-forming functional groups, preferably acyl groups of the formula [R1-R3 are each a lower alkylene; (n) is 1-4], to the molecules of a powdery raw material (preferably the powder of natural fibers or regenerated fibers, the powder of synthetic fibers, or the like). A method for introducing the chelate-forming functional groups to the powdery raw material includes a method for directly reacting the functional groups with a chelate-forming compound having a reactive functional group (preferably nitrilotriacetic acid anhydride, ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid dianhydride, or the like). For example, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid dianhydride is heated and dissolved in N,N- dimethylformamide and then powdery cellulose is added.
