To provide technology which improves smoothness of speed change operation and maintains the changed state of speed after speed change in a power tool having a parallel shaft type transmission mechanism.
In the power tool having the transmission mechanism 117 and a tip tool, the transmission mechanism has first and second rotary shafts 123, 125 which are mutually parallel arranged, a first power transmission passage having a first gear train and a first clutch 141, and a second power transmission passage P2 having a second gear train and a second clutch 145. By switching between a power transmission state and a power cut-off state of the first and second clutches 141, 145 corresponding to a load applied to the tip tool, switching between the first and second power transmission passages is carried out with the first and second gear trains engaged with each other. When switching between the first and second power transmission passages is carried out, the transmission mechanism holds the switched state till a power source is stopped.
