PURPOSE:To prepare a preform which allows a molding material to be uniformly polymerized in a mold in the reaction injection molding process and which contributes to the weight reduction of a molded item by preparing the preform having both surface layers comprising a lowly permeable carbon fiber and an internal layer comprising a highly permeable glass fiber. CONSTITUTION:One surface layer 10 comprising a lowly permeable carbon fiber is baked in a pressed state and an internal layer 30 comprising a highly permeable glass fiber is placed on said surface layer 10 and baked in a pressed state, while the other surface layer 20 comprising the lowly permeable carbon fiber is placed on said internal layer 30 and baked in a pressed state, thus giving a preform. As a binder for both surface layers 10 and 20, one contg. polyvinyl butyral is used. The resulting preform allows a RIM raw material to have a flowability conforming to the progress of the reaction in the preform in the reaction injection molding process, improves the thermal conductivity of the surface layers, and causes the material to flow through the entire preform and to be synthesized (polymerized) uniformly. In addition, the preform contributes to the weight reduction of a molded item.
