To produce a preform for a metal matrix composite material sufficiently high in mechanical strength even if being baked at a low temp. and free from deterioration in the performance of an additive and to provide a method for producing it.
This objective material is a preform for a metal matrix composite material in which at least a part of a reinforcing material composed of a ceramic material has a three-dimensional skeletal structure binded by a glass binder, and, moreover, as an additive, in the preform for a metal matrix composite material, the oxide powder of one or ≥ two kinds of metals selected from the group consisting of iron, copper, titanium, zinc, nickel, chromium, manganese, tungsten, lead, bismuth, vanadium, cobalt, tin, boron, magnesium and aluminum exclusive of carbon materials or ceramic materials is contained.
