PURPOSE: To obtain uniform qualities and excellent strength by incorporating a self-hardening modified novolac resin and a reinforcing short fiber which can carbonize.
CONSTITUTION: A self-hardening modified novolac resin (A) is prepared from the reaction of a novolac resin and aldehydes, etc. A reinforcing short fiber (B) having 0.1-50mm average length and >40 aspect ratio which can carbonize is obtd. from pitch fiber, etc. A polymer flocculating agent (C) is prepared by partially hydrolyzing polyacrylamide, etc. Then, components (A) and (B) and latex are added in a water-base medium to obtain a water-base slurry (E) in a manner that the proportions becomes 10-90wt.% of (A), 5-90wt.% of (B) and 0.1-10wt.% of the latex to the carbon fiber-reinforced carbon material preformed body (D) to be obtd. Then, component (C) is added by 0.1-10wt.% of the component (D) to component (E) and the mixture is molded to form the molded body (D). The molded body (D) is then calcined in vacuum to produce the carbon fiber-reinforced carbon material.
