Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL: Compd. of formula I [wherein W is formulas II or III (wherein R1 is H, hydroxy or acyloxy; R2 and R3 are each hydroxy or acyloxy; when R2 is acyloxy, R1 and R3 are each different from hydroxy].

EXAMPLE: (20S)-20-methylpregna-5,16-diene-3β,21-diol 3-acetate.

USE: Synthetic intermediate of vitamin D3 metabolite of 1,25-dihydroxy- cholecalciferol, etc.

PROCESS: A compd. of formula IV is reacted with ethyltriphenyl phosphonium halide through Bittich reaction and then, it is reacted with formaldehyde in the presence of an acylation agent. In addition, it is reacted with a weak base and methanol and then, it is catalytically hydrogenated to obtain an aimed compd.
