To stably and sufficiently improve the preheating efficiency of scrap by feeding a charcoal material into a preheater mounted on the top of a melting furnace to introduce a gas containing oxygen.
A shaft 21 communicating with the inside of a furnace is erected on a top part of a melting furnace 11 preheating chambers 41 and 42 divided into two stages, upper and lower, by openable and closable forks 31 and 32 are formed in the shaft 21 and scrap and charcoal material are fed into the preheating chambers 41 and 42. A gas supply pipe 61 is inserted into the preheating chamber 41 from an upper part of the side of the shaft 21 and a valve 1 is interposed on the gas supply pipe 61 to introduce a gas containing oxygen. Likewise, a gas supply pipe 62 is inserted into the shaft 21 right below the fork 32 from a lower part of the side of the shaft 21 and a valve 72 is interposed on the gas supply pipe 62 to introduce the gas containing oxygen. This can stabilize the preheating efficiency of the scrap.
