Abstract:
To actualize combustion involving compression ignition while reducing combustion noise down to a permissible value or smaller.SOLUTION: The geometric compression ratio of an engine body (2) is set to be 13 or higher so that, when the engine body is operated in a preset high load region, the effective compression ratio of the engine body is 12 or higher and a difference between the geometric compression ratio and itself is within a range of 2. Gas introduced into a combustion chamber (17) is supercharged by a supercharging system (49), the fuel is injected at least in the second half of a compression stroke by an injector (6), and air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber is ignited by a spark plug (25) after finishing the fuel injection but before the compression top dead center. As a result, the combustion of air-fuel mixture is caused in the engine body by flame propagation and then the combustion of unburnt air-fuel mixture is caused by compression ignition.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 8
