To prevent occurrence of knocking caused by rapid combustion in a premixture compression ignition internal combustion engine.
The engine is provided with a first fuel injection valve 112 for directly injecting fuel to a combustion chamber 105 and a second fuel injection valve 115 for injecting fuel to an intake port 104. Catalyst 117 for lowering the ignition temperature by oxidizing the fuel to lower an octane value is interposed into the intake port 104 on the downstream side of the second fuel injection valve 115. The fuel with its ignition temperature lowered by passing through the catalyst 117 after being injected from the second fuel injection valve 115 forms an air-fuel mixture layer in the center of the combustion chamber 105 while the fuel injected from the first fuel injection valve 112 forms an air-fuel mixture layer to surround the air-fuel mixture layer in the center of the combustion chamber. The center air-fuel mixture layer is made to be compressed and self-ignited, then, the surrounding air-fuel mixture layer is made to be compressed and self-ignited.
