In an engine 100, water 21 is sprayed to a premixture before compression self-ignition through a spray nozzle 20 connected to an atomizer 22 to an intake passage 12 in order to mix the water 21 with the premixture. The spray quantity can be set by the atomizer 22, and it is controlled on the basis of the output signal of a controller 12. The water 21 contained in the premixture is evaporated up to the compression self-ignition, and cooled by taking the latent heat of the premixture. The temperature of the premixture before compression self-ignition is regulated by a mixing means B to regulate the self-ignition timing. According to this, a premixture compression self- ignitable engine can be provided.
