PURPOSE: To obtain 1-nitroanthrquinon-2-carboxylic acid in high yield and with high purity without causing heavy metal contamination by the waste water by a technically easy and economical method.
CONSTITUTION: 1-Nitro-2-methylanthraquinone expressed by formula I (X is H, Cl or Br) is oxidized at 180 to 200°C, preferably 185 to 190°C in an org. reaction medium, preferably a benzole deriv. (especially nitrobenzole) by using nitric acid as an oxidizing agent having 40 to 100 wt.% concn., preferably 50 to 70 wt.% concn. to obtain 1-nitroanthraquinone-2-carboxylic acid expressed by formula II. After the reaction is completed, the reaction mixture is cooled to precipitate the product of formula II, which is separated by filtration. The unreacted starting compd. of formula I in the mother liquid is used again in the next oxidation process. The compd. of formula II is an important intermediate for the production of a vat dye.
