PURPOSE: To economically obtain a 1,1-disubstituted ethylene compound by the reaction of a formyl compound with water in the presence of formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and an alkanol or in the presence of a secondary amine and a protonic acid.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of obtaining a compound expressed by formula II from a compound expressed by formula I (Z represents COOR2, CN or COR3, R1 represents a group of an aliphatic, an alicyclic, an aromatic, a heterocyclic group or the like, R2 represents a 1-15C aliphatic, an alicyclic or an aromatic group, R3 represents a (substituted) R2), the reaction with water is carried out in the presence of formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde and (A) the 1-12C alkanol or (B) a mixture of the 1-12C alkanol and water or (C) in the presence of the secondary amine and the protonic acid at 0-200°C. By the method, the compound useful as a starting material of a synthetic resin, a varnish, a lubricating oil, an adhesive, a fiber auxiliary agent or the like is obtained with high purity in high yield.
