PURPOSE: To prepare 1,4-naphthoquinone, economically, in an industrial scale, by the oxidation of naphthalene with molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting of particles having holes penetrating therethrough to increase the specific surface area of the particles.
CONSTITUTION: Naphthalene is oxidized with molecular oxygen in the presence of a vanadium oxide catalyst consisting of particles having holes penetrating therethrough. The catalyst is preferably composed of vanadium oxide, an alkali metal sulfate and an alkali metal pyrosulfate, and supported on a carrier composed mainly of SiO2. The holes increase the specific surface area of the particle without increasing the through-flow resistance of the catalyst layers and increase the conversion rate of naphthalene. The length of the micro-pores of the catalyst is decreased and the successive reaction to phthalic anhydride is suppressed by this process, and 1,4- naphthoquinone is obtained in high selectivity and yield.
