PURPOSE: To prepare 1,4-naphthoquinone, in high yield, by oxidizing naphthalene with O2 using a catalyst composed of vanadium oxide, an alkali metal sulfate, and alkali metal pyrosulfate supported by a carrier consisting of a silicon oxide having specific shape.
CONSTITUTION: 1,4-Naphthoquinone is prepared by the oxidation of naphthalene with O2 in the presence of a catalyst obtained by supporting a catalyst component composed of vanadium oxide, an alkali metal sulfate, and an alkali metal pyrosulfate on a carrier composed mainly of silicon oxide. In the above process, the particle of said catalyst has open pores of ≥ about 1mm diameter, and the volume ratio of the crust of the particle to the open pore is 0.02W0.82, esp. 0.04W0.56.
EFFECT: The residual amount of the unreacted naphthalene can be suppressed to an extremely low level when the amount of feed gas per unit weight of the catalyst or unit volume of the packed catalyst is large.
