PURPOSE: To prevent the incrase in the air permeation resistance in a catalytic bed, stabilize the operation and improve the yield in oxidizing naphthalene in the vapor phase in the presence of a catalyst containing vanadium oxide-alkali sulfate, etc. supported on a carrier, by the presence of sulfur trioxide in a gas containing oxygen to be fed.
CONSTITUTION: A gas containing oxygen and 1ppm or more sulfur trioxide at the inlet of a catalytic bed is fed to a fixed catalytic bed of the catalyst containing a catalytic component, consisting of vanadium oxide, alkali metallic sulfate and alkali metallic pyrosulfate essentially, and supported on an inert carrier, e.g. silicon oxide, heated at 330°C or above, and catalytically oxidized in the vapor phase to give the aimed compound. The amount of the sulfur trioxide present in the gas containing oxygen is increased slowly with increasing temperature as follows: 1W10ppm at 330W380°C and 3W20ppm at 380W430°C.
