Abstract:

PURPOSE: To economically obtain 2-(aryl amino)-3-carboxy-(10H)-acridone of a synthetic intermediate of a compound useful as a pigment at a high yield by cyclizing 2,5-diaryl amino terephthalic acid using a specific quantity of polyphosphoric acid as a dehydrating agent under a prescribed temp. condition.

CONSTITUTION: The compound expressed by formula II is obtained by using the 2,5-diarylamino terephthalic acid expressed by formula I (each of R and R' represents II, F, Cl, Br, a 1-4C alkyl-, a 1-4C oxyalkyl- or a carboamide group, each of (x) and (y) represents l-4) as a raw material and the polyphosphoric acid (P2O5 content is 75-85%) or an acid polyphosphate (P205 content is 75-85%, preferably 78-82%) 5-15 times, preferably 5-8 times in weight as the dehydrating agent and cyclizing at 60-100°C, preferably 80-90°C. As the acid polyphosphate, particularly a methyl-, benzyl- or phenyl-ester is suitable.
