Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain a compound in a high yield in the presence of ammonia and an anhydrous metal catalyst in a nonpolar aprotic diluent at a specific temperature at the time of executing catalytic hydrogenation of 2-chloro-5-cyano- pyridine.
CONSTITUTION: This 2-chloro-5-aminomethylpyridine of formula II is obtained by reacting 2-chloro-5-cyano-pyridine of formula I in the presence of ammonia and an anhydrous metal catalyst (Raney cobalt is suitable). In this case, catalytic hydrogenation is carried out by hydrogen in a nonpolar aprotic diluent (particularly aromatic hydrocarbon is suitable) at 20 to 150°C particularly 80 to 110°C. The 2-chloro-5-aminomethylpyridine of formula II is useful as an intermediate of a hypotensive agent or an insecticide.
