PURPOSE: To obtain 2-methylbutanal being useful as raw material of intermediate such as 2-methylbutylic acid for preparation of perfume in high purity and high yield by distilling mixtures of isomeric aldehydes having 5 carbon atoms in the presence of formaldehyde and an aldolization catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is obtained in high purity of 97 to 99% by distilling mixtures consisting of isomeric aldehydes having 5 carbon atoms such as mixtures formed by hydroformylation of isometric butenes, etc., in a commercial distillation column with 9 to 72 theoretical plates charged with glass rings or metallic spiral bodies after storing together with preferably 1-10C monocarbonc acids such as n-butyric acids, etc., or 2-10C di- to polycarbonic acids for several seconds to several hours under pressure in the presence of formalin and an aldolization catalyst of secondary amine represented by the formula, R1-Nh-R2 (R1 and R2 are each 1-12C alkyl).
